Here I will attempt to spread some truth and bust up some these myths in the process. The first is myth has to do with whether people with diabetes are more likely to contract a cold and the flu more easily as a result of not having a balanced intake of proper nutrients.

The answer to this is that people suffering from diabetes are no more likely to contract a cold or the flu than anyone else. However, as recommended for everyone people with diabetes should get a flu shot; this is simply a precautionary measure because people with diabetes who contract any illness will find it much harder to control their diabetes.

Other considerations are that those people who do contract the flu will more often than not go on to develop more serious complications related to type 2 diabetes.

Diabetic diet guidelines for sweets

Another myth that causes worry for people with diabetes is whether they can eat sweets and chocolate. We all have heard that people with diabetes should avoid sweets at all cost and although generally speaking this is true it is not necessary the absolute truth in every case.

For example, sweets and chocolate when eaten as part of a healthy lifestyle are perfectly fine for diabetics to eat, but as always in a limited amount that is in combination with a good exercise regime and not with a sedentary lifestyle. Sweets are only off-limits to people who don't have a healthy meal plan or a regular exercise regime and this is also true for those that are for non-diabetic.

Another myth that needs busting is the myth that people with diabetes think that they should only eat small amounts of starchy foods, such as bread, potatoes and pasta. As always moderation is the key to healthy living so starchy and whole grain foods should be a prerequisite for any healthy diet.

These foods are excellent sources of fiber that are great for a healthy gut, things like potatoes, yams, peas, and corn, whole grains cereal, pasta and rice are just what the Doctor ordered or should order.

Diabetic sufferers are also concerned about the suggestion by some that people who have diabetes should only eat special diabetic foods.

The fact is that a meal plan base on healthy living as mentioned above is what generally speaking everyone should be aiming towards. A diet low in saturated fat with little or no sugar and salt is highly recommended for people who are diabetics and also that they should eat meals that are whole grain based with plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Generally speaking foods that are labeled as special diabetic or dietetic offer no special benefits to diabetes sufferers even though they tend to be more expensive, this is because most of them contains laxative causing sugar alcohols and can even raise the blood sugar levels.

Another myth that people have a problem understanding is whether or not eating too much sugar causes diabetes? The simple answer is that eating too much sugar does not cause diabetes, although it might cause some other problems, but Type 1 diabetes is caused by a genetic disposition, along with certain environmental condition and other unknown factors, which triggers the diabetes gene.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is caused by genetics and people's sedentary lifestyles. Those with obesity and a high calorie diet are at high risk of developing diabetes mellitus type 2, it does not matter whether from sugar or from fat.
